Ledge, Shoring & Rock Drilling in Jamaica Plain & Roslindale
Here the question is usually rock, not water. Puddingstone and volcanic rock come close to the surface on the hills, sand and gravel fill the valleys, and one foundation can go from ledge to soil across its width.
The ground
What's under Jamaica Plain & Roslindale
Most of Jamaica Plain sits on the Roxbury Conglomerate, the pebbly rock Bostonians call puddingstone: 97% of the neighborhood's mapped bedrock. Roslindale's rock is more mixed, with Cambridge Argillite, Mattapan volcanic rock, conglomerate and Dedham granite (USGS state map). Kaye (1976) noted that the hard conglomerates and volcanic rocks stand out as hills and knobs, while the softer argillites form the valleys.
The USGS surficial map shows 35% of the two neighborhoods as thin till, where rock is usually within 10 to 15 feet of the surface, and 6% as areas of abundant outcrop or shallow bedrock, where the soil over rock is less than 5 to 10 feet thick. Another 43%, mostly in the valleys, is glacial sand and gravel.
Public borings that reached rock found a median depth of 32 ft, but the middle half runs from 15 ft to 101 ft (37 logs, all MWRA engineering borings for the region's water and sewer works). That spread is the point: plan for ledge without assuming it, and let probes or borings on the lot settle it.

The work here is drilling as much as digging. Rock removal is by others; the drilled work around it, and the support for cuts in soil above it, is the scope we bid.
Foundations that meet ledge
A new house or addition on a hillside lot can hit rock under part of the footprint. Footings can be pinned to the ledge, a cut can be held by soldier piles drilled into rock, and anchors can tie a wall back to it, depending on the engineer's design.

Hillside lots mean cuts, and a cut through till over rock may be held with soldier piles and lagging, soil nails or rock anchors, depending on how deep the rock is and what sits above the cut.

Mixed ground under one building
When part of a foundation bears on rock and part on soil, the engineer may carry the soil side down to rock on micropiles or drilled shafts so the building settles evenly.

Infill in the valleys
In the sand-and-gravel valleys a basement can reach the water table in ground that runs when wet, so the excavation support has to hold both. Most new building here is infill: the city issued 126 new-building permits in the two neighborhoods in 2021–2025.

- Permits that describe digging below grade
- Building permits whose applicant narrative uses, at the start of a word, excavate/excavation, underpin/underpinning, dig out, or lowering the basement or cellar. Negated phrases (“no excavation”) are removed first; driveway, parking-lot and paving jobs that name nothing structural are dropped. Boston amendments and trade permits are not counted. A floor, not a census: plenty of basement jobs never use these words.
- New-building permits
- Permits the city files as permit type “Erect/New Construction”. Certificates of occupancy that carry the same “Erect” work label are excluded.
- Depth to bedrock
- Public borings and well-driller logs that reached rock, placed inside the boundary by their coordinates. Median and middle half (25th to 75th percentile). Fewer than 10 logs: no typical depth is quoted. Holes that stopped above rock are counted separately.
- Inside the Groundwater Conservation Overlay District
- Share of the land area inside the overlay's mapped areas, measured on a flat (Massachusetts State Plane) projection.
- Groundwater
- Active Boston Groundwater Trust observation wells with at least two readings in the last twelve months. Each well's median reading, then the median across wells: as an elevation (Boston City Base) and as a depth below the well's rim, which sits at sidewalk level. Fewer than 10 wells: not quoted.
