Shoring & Underpinning for Allston-Brighton Infill
New buildings in Allston-Brighton often go up beside occupied two- and three-family houses, on lots with little room to spare: the city issued 92 new-building permits here in 2021–2025. The ground runs from filled river flats in Allston to thin till over puddingstone on Brighton's hills.
The ground
What's under Allston-Brighton
Allston's low ground along the Charles is made land, 44% of the neighborhood on the USGS surficial map, with glaciomarine clay and silt under part of it (13%) and glacial sand and gravel (26%). The rock under Allston is mostly Cambridge Argillite, with some Roxbury Conglomerate (USGS state map).
Brighton is mostly glacial: 51% thin till, where rock is usually within 10 to 15 feet, 15% thick till in drumlins, and 6% mapped as abundant outcrop or shallow bedrock. The rock is mainly Roxbury Conglomerate, the puddingstone Kaye (1976) described as gravel cemented into hard rock: 82% of Brighton's mapped bedrock.
Public logs are thin on the ground: 17 reached rock inside the two neighborhoods, at a median of 44 ft with the middle half between 30 ft and 104 ft, too few to lean on. Brighton's 11 logs alone put rock at a median of 36 ft. On a lot here, borings or probes matter more than any regional number.

Most below-grade work here happens beside a house someone lives in. The neighbor's footing, the street and the rock set the method.
Infill with a level below grade
Mid-size infill buildings with a basement or garage level sit tight to the lot lines, so the excavation support runs right beside the neighbors' foundations: soldier piles and lagging where the ground allows, braced or tied back depending on what the neighbors and the street allow.

How these numbers are counted
- Permits that describe digging below grade
- Building permits whose applicant narrative uses, at the start of a word, excavate/excavation, underpin/underpinning, dig out, or lowering the basement or cellar. Negated phrases (“no excavation”) are removed first; driveway, parking-lot and paving jobs that name nothing structural are dropped. Boston amendments and trade permits are not counted. A floor, not a census: plenty of basement jobs never use these words.
- New-building permits
- Permits the city files as permit type “Erect/New Construction”. Certificates of occupancy that carry the same “Erect” work label are excluded.
- Depth to bedrock
- Public borings and well-driller logs that reached rock, placed inside the boundary by their coordinates. Median and middle half (25th to 75th percentile). Fewer than 10 logs: no typical depth is quoted. Holes that stopped above rock are counted separately.
- Inside the Groundwater Conservation Overlay District
- Share of the land area inside the overlay's mapped areas, measured on a flat (Massachusetts State Plane) projection.

- Active Boston Groundwater Trust observation wells with at least two readings in the last twelve months. Each well's median reading, then the median across wells: as an elevation (Boston City Base) and as a depth below the well's rim, which sits at sidewalk level. Fewer than 10 wells: not quoted.
