The problem

The Phase II garage at 16 Edgemont Landing needed a permanent soil nail wall built to a PE-stamped design, on a schedule tied to a facing subcontractor's shotcrete window.

The engineered approach

Sixty fully grouted soil nails on 32 mm hollow threaded bar, installed 20 ft into the ground with a 2 ft stickout, each finished with a 10 in × 5/8 in bearing plate, hex nut and washer. ESC's scope is installation only — the geotechnical investigation, wall design, layout and PE stamp are furnished by others.

The general contractor excavates the cut in lifts from the left. At each lift Earth Support advances a 32 millimetre hollow threaded bar into the retained ground behind the face at a shallow downward angle, drilling on a sacrificial bit and flushing with grout, so the hole is drilled and fully grouted in a single pass — the nails are passive, picking up load as the ground deforms, and are never stressed like tiebacks. Each bar is installed 20 feet into the ground and left with 2 feet projecting from the face, finished with a 10 inch by five eighths inch bearing plate, washer and hex nut. Sixty nails are installed across the wall. Drawn ghosted and dashed, because they are furnished by others rather than by Earth Support, are the shotcrete facing spanning between the nail heads and the future garage structure in the excavation. The subsurface bands from top to bottom are surface soils and fill, glacial outwash sand, dense glacial till, and granite bedrock — a general New England upland profile shown for context, not site geotechnical data.
